Gurus

The Golden saga of Sri Rajarajeswari began in the year 1945. When India was at the threshold of attaining Independence, Guru A.T. Govindraj Pillai along with Bharatha Vidwan T.P. Kuppiah Pillai founded the Kala Mandir in Bombay.

The Gurus of Sri Rajarajeswari Bhrarata Natya Kala Mandir belong to one of the great nattuvanar families (dance teachers) from Tanjore. Under the patronage of royal courts, their illustrious ancestors dedicated their lives to the service of the exalted temples of South India.

Venkatakrishna Nattuvanar was honoured by the royalty of Baroda, Mysore and Ramanathapuram. "Abhinaya Navaneetham" a monumental treatise on abhinaya, an invaluable contribution to the theory of Bharata Natyam, is accredited to Panchapakesa Nattuvanar.

His only son, Bharata Vidwan Kuppiah Pillai, along with Guru Govindraj Pillai, founded the Sri. Rajarajeswari Bharata Natya Kala Mandir in 1945. Under the inspired guidance of Vidwan Kuppiah Pillai, his sons Guru Mahalingam Pillai, Guru Kalyanasundaram and daughter, Srimati Karunambal, the Mandir has become on of the most prestigious institutions for classical dance in India. Many dancers of distinction have been trained at the institute and several have been awarded national scholarships. Srimati Mythili Kalyanasundaram, Guru Vasantkumar and Guru Vishwanath are the other directors of the Kala Mandir.

India's foremost national honours have been accorded to the Gurus of the institute: Guru Kuppiah Pillai, Sangeet Natak Academy fellowship, 1979; Guru Govindraj Pillai, Kalaimamani-best dance teacher in the country, 1974; Guru Mahalingam Pillai, Kalaimamani and the Sangeet Natak Academy Award, 1986; Maharashtra Gaurav Puraskar, awarded by the Government of Maharashtra, 1990. Guru Kalyanasundaram, Kalaimamani Award, 1994.
